Tournament system

The 2018 IWRF Wheelchair Rugby B Division European Championship will be played in the Pajulahti Olympic and Paralympic Training Center, Lahti, Finland on 7–15 of October. There will be eight countries taking part in the tournament, including the host country Finland. The other teams are Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Netherlands, Ireland, Italy and Czech Republic. The top two countries will be promoted to the Division A and the bottom two will be relegated to the Division C.

The eight Division B teams are divided in two pools. Teams will be awarded two points for each win during the preliminary round, and zero points for each loss. All games shall be played until a winner is declared. Games that are tied at the end of regulation time shall continue through as many overtime periods as are necessary to resolve the tie. This applies to all rounds of play.

At the end of the preliminary round, if two or more teams are tied in point totals, the standings shall be determined based on points gained in the games between the tied teams. If there’s still a tie, the standings will be decided on the basis of the goal differential among the tied teams, during only those games when they played each other. If there’s still a tie, the standings will be decided on which team scored the most goals in the preliminary round games between the tied teams. If there’s still a tie, the standings will be decided on the basis of the goal differential among the tied teams during all preliminary round games. If there’s still a tie, the standings will be decided based on which team scored the most goals during all preliminary round games.

Pool matches are played from Wednesday 10th to Friday 12th October and the top two teams from each pool will proceed to the semifinals played on Saturday 13th October. Winner of the pool will play against the second placed team from the other pool in the semifinal. The semifinals are decisive matches in securing a place to the A Division.

The teams placed third and fourth in the pool stage play their first placing matches on Saturday 13th October. The third placed team will meet the fourth placed team from the other pool. The losers of these matches will be relegated to the Division C. On Sunday 14th October the winners of these placing matches will meet in a match for the 5th place of the tournament and the losers will meet in a match for the 7th place.

Bronze medal match and gold medal match are played on Sunday 14th October.
